What is an Impacted tooth?

An impacted tooth is a tooth that has failed to emerge fully through the gum line or has not erupted at all. It is typically a result of a lack of space in the jawbone, which prevents the tooth from growing in its normal position.

Impacted teeth most commonly occur in the wisdom teeth (third molars) due to their location at the back of the mouth and their late eruption time, but other teeth can also be impacted.

Impacted teeth can cause a range of problems, including pain, infection, gum disease, damage to adjacent teeth, and even cysts or tumors. In some cases, impacted teeth may not cause any symptoms and may only be discovered during a dental exam or X-ray.

Treatment for impacted teeth depends on the severity of the condition and the location of the tooth. If the impacted tooth is not causing any problems, it may be left alone and monitored closely. However, if the tooth is causing pain, infection, or other complications, it may need to be extracted surgically. In some cases, orthodontic treatment may be recommended to create more space in the jawbone and allow the tooth to erupt properly.
